Leave the mundane world behind and step into The Portal - an enchanting metaphysical and occult shoppe, nestled within the centuries-old walls of the historic King's Wark complex - a former royal residence, storehouse and armoury - in the very heart of Old Leith.
Portal Leith's speciality is rare and unusual crystals, but it is packed to its 18th century rafters with all manner of magickal tools, witchy essentials, tarot cards, books, gifts, jewellery, vintage treasures, antiques, and locally sourced artisanal wares. It also offers daily empowering readings by skilled practitioners in palmistry, tarot, and other forms of divination.
But The Portal is far more than a mere shop. The mystical energy within is palpable to all who cross its threshold, with one patron describing the space as feeling ‘alive’. Synchronicities and magickal moments unfold each day, no doubt amplified by the vast array of mystical artefacts, kindred souls, and spirited conversations that take place within its ancient stone walls. The resident (friendly) Portal spirits even make themselves known from time to time!
Portal Leith is a proudly autistic / ADHD run business and is a neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ safe space. The shop's owner, Sam (she / they) and husband Derek (he / him) have created an environment that's warm and welcoming, where visitors feel at ease to wander and imbibe the magickal energy for as long as they desire. They delight in engaging with their guests, and no topic or question is too strange for them - they are ever eager to offer advice and guidance.
The name "Portal Leith" is a metaphysical spin on the area’s historic moniker, "The Port of Leith", a vibrant neighbourhood north of the city, with its own unique character and storied past.
Sam comes from a long line of Leithers, and the name was given in honour of her late granny Isa- the proudest Leither who ever lived, and always referred to Leith by its Sunday name.
The shop is easily reached from the city centre by bus, and a short walk from the Constitution Street tram stop. Situated in the heart of Leith Shore, it is a stone’s throw from the waterfront, lined with wondrous local eateries, and the scenic Water of Leith Walkway, which leads to such notable Edinburgh landmarks as The Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, Dean Village, Stockbridge, and The Botanic Gardens.
A must-see for any seeker in Edinburgh; the witchiest of all cities. The Portal is open- won't you step inside?
